Gabe has been making this smoothie for as long as I can remember. The first time he made if for me I was so reluctant to try it and I’m pretty sure I held my breath and gulped it down because I was sure it would taste awful. You guys, for a food blogger I am a pretty picky eater and this was well before juicing became a thing. Jamba Juice was the norm for smoothies and they didn’t typically contain vegetables. Even though I was sure I wouldn’t like it, I was still in the early stages of our relationship and wanting to impress him so I drank a full pint of it. To my surprise it was actually delicious! If I’m remembering correctly I think that’s how I first ate kale. Again, this was before kale was cool (yep, we’ve been together for a long time).
This is now a staple in our house and we usually always have a mason jar full in our fridge. This is the recipe for the base mix but often times we’ll add other ingredients like cilantro, berries, lemon, ginger, etc. We don’t add protein powder to this smoothie since we tend to drink it over 2-3 days but to each his own. With this smoothie there’s no excuse not to get your veggies in at breakfast. It’s not meant to be overly sweet since there are more vegetables than fruit so it won’t spike your blood sugar like other smoothies do.
Happy Cooking!
